An 80% increase in floor space for modern family living
This project involved the extension and loft conversion of an existing bungalow to significantly enhance its size, functionality, and long-term suitability for modern living. The original property was modest in scale and constrained in layout, with limited connection to the garden, insufficient accommodation for the client’s evolving needs, and no obvious or welcoming entrance upon arrival. Our appointment was to reimagine the bungalow through a coordinated programme of extension and roof alteration, transforming it into a spacious and contemporary family home.
The proposed scheme resulted in an 80% increase in floor space compared to the original dwelling. This substantial uplift was carefully managed to ensure the building retained an appropriate scale and presence within its setting. The design strategy focused on extending the footprint where appropriate while introducing a well-considered loft conversion that capitalised on the existing roof form, allowing new accommodation to be added without overwhelming the original structure.
A key element of the proposal was the creation of a generous and clearly legible entrance. The new entrance is positioned to be immediately visible when entering the site, providing a strong sense of arrival and improving wayfinding.
This intervention not only enhances the external appearance of the dwelling but also establishes a clear spatial hierarchy internally, with circulation spaces organised around the new entrance.
Materials were selected to unify the overall composition, with a contemporary palette that refreshes the appearance of the property while remaining respectful of its context. The extensions are expressed as simple, legible forms, complemented by a loft conversion that integrates seamlessly with the existing bungalow.
Internally, the transformation is significant. The reconfigured layout provides generous open-plan living spaces at ground floor, alongside well-proportioned bedrooms and ancillary spaces at first floor level. The new arrangement greatly improves circulation, flexibility, and the overall quality of the living environment.
The principal challenge was achieving a substantial increase in floor area while maintaining a balanced and coherent architectural form.
Careful consideration was given to massing, roof geometry, and the relationship between existing and new elements to ensure the extended bungalow sat comfortably within its surroundings.
This project demonstrates how a bungalow can be successfully transformed through a combination of extensions and loft conversion.
By increasing floor space by 80% and introducing a clear and welcoming entrance, the completed scheme delivers a contemporary, flexible, and future-proof home while retaining a strong connection to the original building.
