A heritage led extension within a conservation area
This project involved the extension and comprehensive refurbishment of an existing dwelling located within a historic parkland setting and designated conservation area. The original property, while structurally sound, had become outdated in terms of layout, appearance, and performance, and no longer met the needs of modern family living. Our role was to carefully enhance the building while respecting the sensitivities of its heritage context.
The proposed scheme focused on extending the roof over the existing garage to create additional accommodation, alongside a wider programme of refurbishment works. This approach allowed the dwelling to benefit from a 30% increase in floor space compared to the original building, delivering improved functionality without excessive outward expansion. The additional space enabled a more balanced internal layout and greater flexibility for day-to-day living.
A key aspect of the design was the careful updating of external materials. The existing palette was reinterpreted to provide a more cohesive and contemporary appearance, while remaining sympathetic to the character of the conservation area. Timber cladding, high-quality render, and refined detailing were introduced to unify old and new elements, ensuring the extension reads as a natural evolution of the original house rather than a competing addition.
The refurbishment works also significantly improved the overall quality of the dwelling. Internal spaces were rationalised to improve circulation, natural light, and connections between rooms, while the external alterations enhanced the building’s presence within its setting. Particular attention was paid to the roof form and proportions to ensure the extended garage element sat comfortably alongside the existing structure.
