Improved comfort, views, and performance in a coastal setting
This project involved the refurbishment of an existing seafront café, focused on the replacement of a poorly performing conservatory-style structure with a new, energy-efficient enclosure. Our appointment followed ongoing operational issues with the existing café extension, which suffered from poor thermal performance, excessive glare, and limited year-round usability. The aim was to deliver a robust, comfortable, and visually cohesive solution that enhanced both customer experience and operational efficiency while responding to the exposed coastal setting.
The existing conservatory structure was cold and uncomfortable during winter months and prone to overheating in summer, resulting in an inconsistent internal environment and underutilised seating space. The proposed refurbishment replaced this element with a fully insulated enclosure designed to provide consistent internal comfort throughout the year.
The new structure allows the café to operate effectively in all seasons, significantly extending its usable floor area without altering the overall footprint of the building. The refurbished enclosure incorporates high-performance glazing and insulated construction to improve thermal efficiency, reduce energy demand, and mitigate the effects of wind and salt-laden coastal air.
Large areas of glazing maintain strong visual connections to the seafront and maximise views out to the promenade and coastline, reinforcing the café’s relationship with its setting while improving internal comfort.
Particular attention was given to integrating the new enclosure with the existing café building. The architectural approach focused on clean, simple detailing and durable materials suitable for a harsh marine environment. The revised façade improves the café’s street presence and provides a clearer, more inviting frontage for customers approaching from the promenade.
Internally, the refurbishment has transformed the usability of the space. The new enclosure creates a bright, flexible seating area that supports a range of customer needs, from casual takeaway use to longer dwell times, while improving circulation and accessibility for staff and visitors alike.
The primary challenge was delivering a high-performance enclosure within a constrained seafront location, exposed to wind, weather, and heavy public use.
Careful coordination was required to ensure the new structure met Building Regulations, addressed thermal performance issues, and could be constructed with minimal disruption to the café’s operation.
